'Way of the Goat' is a project centred around researching the movement and climbing skills of feral goats in Snowdonia with the objective to learn from them how to defy the fear of heights. It seems to be the goats' nimble footwork that enables them to move on almost vertical surfaces as if they were horizontal pathways.
Through close observation and through a physical approach, Varsity of Maneuvers will seek to gain an understanding of the animals' movements on the steep cliffs.
Varsity of Maneuvers believe this provides an opportunity to challenge a Darwinian gaze in setting out to (physically) learn from the animals' movements, rather than solely scrutinizing them through a camera in order to define a hierarchical difference. Therefore, they are keen to work with the documentary format in a way that equally exposes their efforts and the goats’ skills.
Following this research/residency period events such as screenings, talks and workshops will be set up in Snowdonia, Lynton, Cardiff and ‘Picture This’ in Bristol.
Varsity of Maneuvers is an artist group founded in autumn 2007. Its core members are Birgit Binder (Germany) and Jorda Planellas.
They create interdisciplinary work that uses movement as a physical and conceptual starting point in their work. Their projects can be framed as physical maneuvers that seek to cut through social, ecological and spatial fabrics of diverse lived environments. Varsity of Maneuvers understands their projects as 'teachers' and as such they are driven by collaborative research and rooted in place. They currently experiment with different ways of documenting and disseminating their work, which principally take place in public and so far could be experienced mostly through
participation.
Kayle Brandon from Irational will collaborate with the artists on the workshops elements.
