A Wall with a View commission is a temporary 26 metre-long interactive magnetic poetry wall. The magnets are moveable, enabling passers-by to create their own poems or statements from selected words on the wall. The four artists have worked collaboratively to combine themes of interactivity and the physicality of this hoarding, in relation to the historical and social implications of regeneration schemes in Cardiff Bay.

The Bay’s history finds expression through the choice of texts used. The words printed on the magnets are taken from existing poems and song lyrics, rearranging these texts into new ones. The poems are all connected to Cardiff so the words, even when repositioned, will maintain this connection.

The artists are inviting the public to interact with the work through creating an ever-changing word display on the wall. The artwork will be periodically photographed and the images will be exhibited regularly in the Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre ‘The Tube’ and Cardiff Harbour Authority’s website www.cardiffharbour.com and Safle’s website www.safle.com.

“Everyone is encouraged to express themselves through this interactive intervention. We hope this work will please people both aesthetically and conceptually and that it will prove interesting and fun to visitors and local people of all ages.” Artists Ed Elliott, Paula Morison, Lauren Curl and Madge.

Councillor Howells, who formally opened the artwork, added, “Public art has long been encouraged within the Bay. This new piece adds to a list of joint collaborations with local, national and international organisations that encourage artists to develop pieces within the welsh capital. I am proud to have been invited here today to unveil “Wall with a View”, and welcome people of all ages to come along to view the interactive exhibit at the entrance to the Cardiff Bay Barrage Coast Path.”

The Artists

Lauren Curl – Repetition and layering are strong elements in Lauren’s mixed media compositions. Although her practice is predominantly print-based, her recent work has focused on the relationship between static and moving images.

Ed Elliott – Inspired by music, his work includes personal significance, as well as exploring the languages of sculpture and the aesthetic. Using symbolism, his work questions the objective nature of reality and the way people see, and explore the forgotten act of looking.
Madge – In the context of a divinely created world, I, an imperfect being must acknowledge the friction between chaos and control in order to exist and to create.

Paula Morison – Coming from a background of contemporary sculpture Paula’s practice focuses on the small details of everyday life and uses a variety of media. Fate, chance and coincidence also provide an important background to the narratives in her work.

Mentoring Artists - Bermingham & Robinson

For the past three years the Cardiff-based visual artists Robert Bermingham & Richard Robinson have been working collaboratively, forging a dynamic artistic partnership that has a growing reputation within the contemporary visual arts in Wales. Their work fuses drawing, collage, installation and sculpture in an exciting and innovative way, utilizing new ideas and techniques and creating a vibrant energy and makeup to the visual arts not only in Wales, but also across the wider UK.

In 2006 they were selected for The Jerwood Drawing Prize and receiving the accolade of being highly commended by the selectors at its opening in London. As a result their work is now being exhibited nationally. As well as their work within group shows across the UK they have had successful solo exhibitions at G39 and at ‘house’ supported by Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff.
