February 2010

Safle is pleased to announce that the recipient of the Safle Graduate Award 2010 is Lauren Elena Sarreas-Webb.

Lauren’s practice is concerned with concepts of identity and ideas of Self. The panel were excited by her contemporary take on public realm interventions and the possibilities for her work to develop further in this direction. Lauren also showed enthusiasm, proactivity and energy for her practice.

We are looking forward to seeing how Lauren’s work progresses and what emerges through her Graduate Award project. We hope that Safle’s support and mentorship will be a valuable contribution to her continuing professional development.

All the short-listed candidates impressed the panel with their presentations during an enjoyable interview day. It was interesting for the panel to see some of the significant talent emerging from Welsh art colleges.

Lauren Elena Sarreas-Webb will begin her Safle Graduate Award project after graduating in Summer 2010.

January 2010

Nine art colleges throughout Wales were asked to nominate up to three visual art BA students who are due to graduate in 2010 to initiate, research, develop and implement a temporary site-specific artwork in the public realm within Wales with guidance and support from Safle.

Each year Safle invites a guest to sit on the selection panel. This year Kate Gray, Director of the Collective Gallery, Edinburgh was asked to take on this role and made a useful and much appreciated contribution.

Following an intense and interesting selection day 6 artists have been short-listed:
Robbie McIntosh and Thomas Bromwell from University of Wales in Cardiff, Jo Matthews from Coleg Menai in Bangor, Michelle Harris from Trinity College in Carmarthen, Lauren Marie Elena Sarreas-Webb from Aberystwyth University School of Art and Rebecca Hammett from University of Wales Newport.

The winner will be announced on Friday 5th February at www.safle.com and in the March issue of a-n magazine. The project will begin in the Summer after the winner graduates.
