Image of Laboral in Spain, where the residency and performances will take place.
En Residencia will take the form of an on-site laboratory throughout the Laboral complex with the artists responding to their allocated space and/or partners and interacting with a broad spectrum of the public.
This vast architectural complex was initially conceived in the 1940s as an orphanage following a local mining disaster but reconverted, during its construction, into an educational institution — the Universidad Laboral de Gijon. In 2001 it was taken over by the Principality of Asturias and converted into a cultural complex.
The artist will begin their residence, working on-site from 17th – 27th February 2009. The project will premiere in Gijon alongside S.P.A.C.E. UK, a site specific showcase organised by the British Council. It will be open to the public between 12.00 - 14.00 each day from 28th February to 1st March and from 3rd – 8th March.
The main areas of their practise is performance and film with a significant measure of interaction between the practitioners themselves, their collaborators and their audience. These interactions and dialogues are crucial to the emotional resonance of the overall project and the interface with the viewer.
En Residencia is a site specific project conceived and curated by Marc Rees who is also the Artistic Director and is commissioned by Teatro de la Laboral - Ciudad de la Cultura, Gijon, Asturias, Spain.
This has project has been co-funded by Safle and Laboral Escena.
