The artist Maia Conran, who is based in Gwynedd, has been given a Stiwdio Safle award to develop and carry out a peripatetic residency project, which explores the often idiosyncratic world of the B&B and their proprietors. Her exploration is intended as a celebration of the uniqueness and variety of B&Bs.

The B&Bs that Maia has chosen to investigate are those that are run in a family home and of a more traditional nature rather than being small hotels. She is researching the B&Bs through local tourist boards and will book herself into each one as a normal guest thereby ensuring a more genuine experience of that B&B.

Maia is taking digital images throughout her stays in the B&Bs and plans to have the images printed onto plates with a view to gifting the plates to the B&Bs in which she took the photographs in the hope that they will be exhibited on their wall.

This project gives the artist an opportunity to build and expand her investigation into the increasingly peripatetic nature of society, the concept of home and how that concept is altered through rootless-ness.
