| Date: | 2009 |
| Artist: | Adrian Stewart |
| Location: | Cardiff city centre |
Safle worked with Cardiff County Council’s Strategic
Planning department to commission the artist Adrian
Stewart to create a light artwork at Wood Street Bridge
in Cardiff as part of an aspirational public realm
enhancement scheme in the city centre, which is
intended to mark the significance of the site and
enhance its status as a gateway to the city centre.
Wood Street Bridge over river.
In the arches of the rail bridge over the river Taff coloured lights form a circular image through reflection in the water and the changes in colour are programmed to move in the direction of traffic flow into the city centre in the morning and out in the evening with the pace quickening at busy times. This movement runs on to the lights in the adjacent pedestrian underpass that form circles on the west wall.
Originally from Belfast and now based in Glasgow, Adrian Stewart was awarded Young Architect of the Year at the Scottish Design Awards in 2002. He established DO-Architecture in 2005, a small collaborative team of artists and architects who aim to combine their skills to generate innovative solutions to each fresh creative design challenge.
